Mel Gibson’s Billion Dollar Divorce

Mel Gibson is about to enter the celebrity record books… and it’s not for being an overly-religous freak, it’s for writing the biggest divorce settlement check in Hollywood. Robyn Gibson and Mel were married 28 years ago and regardless of their prenuptial agreement, Robyn is entitled to half of everything the actor-director-producer has earned during that time… which is roughly $1 billion. A $500 million settlement would easily break previous records: “Michael Jordan ponied up $168 million following his 2006 divorce with wife Juanita; Neil Diamond forked over $150 million after his 1994 split with Marcia Murphey; while Steven Spielberg shelled out $100 million following his 1989 divorce from Amy Irving.”

Gibson’s assets include… “$600+ million grossed by The Passion of the Christ alone, $100-plus million in real estate investments worldwide (he bought an island in Fiji for $15 million in 2004), and $75 million for film and TV projects for which Gibson executive produced.”

The sad thing (well, it sucks for us) is that the settlement is expected to be done in a few months. No fighting, no arguing, just the lawyers, some paperwork and a giant check. Hmm… I wonder if he’ll delivery it like Publishers Clearing house with balloons a tv crew and a giant cardboard check. That’d be awesome.
